So, a couple years back I bought what I thought was a beautiful bonsai from a local garden center. They had it labeled as "bonsai ficus" and it looked pretty convincing to my untrained eyes at the time. I took it home, proud of my new addition, and started treating it to some bonsai care. You know, trimming the roots, shaping the canopy and all that jazz. Fast forward a few months and it starts growing like crazy. Like, this thing was practically on steroids and didn't look like any bonsai I'd seen online or in books. I was confused but figured maybe this was how ficus behaved.
Turns out, after chatting with some more seasoned folks at a bonsai club, I found out it wasn't a bonsai at all. It was just a regular ficus benjamina they'd trimmed up to look bonsai-esque. I felt kinda foolish, to be honest. But at the same time, it was a good lesson in identifying real bonsai and understanding that just because something is labeled a certain way at a store doesn't make it so. I kept the plant anyway, more as a reminder. Now I triple-check everything and ask around before bringing home something new.
